Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is facing a backlash from the White House, Democrats and Jewish leaders, after saying that Jewish people who votes for democrats “is a self-hater who denies his beloved Israel”, Reuters reported.
In an interview with his former advisor, Sebastian Gorka, posted on his website on Monday, Trump stated: “Any Jew who votes for the left-wing Democrats is a self-hater who denies his beloved Israel, but should be ashamed of himself. His party hates Israel.”
Several entities, such as the Anti-Defamation League, the American Jewish Committee, and the Jewish Democratic Council of America, criticised Trump’s statement.
Trump’s comments got a reaction from the White House spokesman, Andrew Bates, who said: “There is no single justification for the spreading of toxic false stereotypes that endanger fellow citizens.”
The Democratic Leader of the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said that Trump’s speech was highly partisan and hateful while he was trying to paint a more conciliatory picture of US-Israel relationship by working on bipartisan agreements.
The Republican Jewish Coalition quashed the statements, Sam Markstein, the spokesperson, expressing bewilderment over the Democratic view on Israel, and insisting that there should be more outcry within the Jewish population.
Donald Trump’s presidential term was characterised by many anti-Semitic remarks that seemed to find connection in the neonazi riot in Charlottesville that took place in 2017. Furthermore, his decision on Jerusalem being the capital of Israel and him meeting up with the white supremacist made him lose more credibility.
Contrary to that, President Biden, who demonstrated his initial support for the actions of Israel in Gaza, has faced demands to take a more balanced stance in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, helping to find a ceasefire and conduct peace negotiations.
