NEW DELHI: Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty hit new record highs in early trade on Thursday, the BSE Sensex rose by 159.18 points to reach an all-time peak of 74,245.17, while the Nifty increased by 49.6 points to 22,523.65, following a positive trend in the US markets and foreign fund inflows.
However, the markets later turned volatile, with both indices fluctuating between highs and lows.
Among the top gainers in the Sensex firms were JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Asian Paints, and State Bank of India. Mahindra & Mahindra, Infosys, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank were among the losers.
The BSE benchmark surged by 408.86 points or 0.55% to settle at a new record high of 74,085.99, while the Nifty climbed by 117.75 points or 0.53% to settle at a fresh closing peak of 22,474.05, on Wednesday.
In the global front, Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong experienced lower trading. The US markets closed positively on Wednesday.
According to exchange data, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 2,766.75 crore on Wednesday.
