Today’s the day — at 5 a.m. PT on Sept. 13, 2024, Apple and other retailers and carriers will start accepting preorders for the new iPhone 16, announced on Monday at Apple’s Glowtime event.

The latest and greatest Apple phone comes in four different models — the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max — and nine colors, along with various storage capacities and accessories.

The iPhone 16 has a new camera launch button and will come loaded with iOS 18, the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system that will launch for all iPhones that support it on Monday.

When will the new iPhone 16 launch?

Apple’s iPhone 16 and 16 Pro lineup will launch on Sept. 20. That’s the date those who preorder early enough — such as right when preorders open — can expect to receive their shiny new device in the mail. That’s also the date in-store stock will become available. Keep in mind that certain configurations tend to “sell out” of available stock, which means there are often delays for the most popular color and storage capacity of a given model.

We suggest you have a couple backup options in mind if you’re determined to get a new iPhone on Sept. 20 or shortly after.

You can select the iPhone 16 model you’d like now, and then preorder when sales begin on Friday, Sept. 13.

If you want to ensure you’re first in the virtual line for Apple’s iPhone 16, plan to preorder your phone as early as you can, especially if you think the color you have your eye on is also the one everyone around you is talking about. iPhone 16 preorders will begin Friday, Sept. 13, at 5 a.m. PT. That applies to Apple’s own online preordering system as well as major retailers and carriers.

Even before the preorders officially begin on the Apple site, you can go in and spec out the exact iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro Max model you want. Select your preferred model, color and storage capacity, then decide if you’re trading in an older iPhone, which could get you up to $650 back from the Apple site.

Then choose an optional carrier and AppleCare Plus coverage (or not) and click the blue Get ready for pre-order button. You can then choose any accessories you want to add and enter your payment information so it’s all ready to go Friday morning.

Which colors does the iPhone 16 come in?

The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are available in five colors: black, white, pink, “teal” (green) and “ultramarine” (blue). The iPhone 16 Pro models come in four finishes: a darker black titanium, a brighter white titanium, natural titanium and a new desert titanium.

How do trade-in offers work for the iPhone 16?

Some carriers are offering up to $1,000 on eligible trade-ins, which could net you an iPhone 16 Pro for free. One important thing to keep in mind is that most trade-in deals from carriers require you to become a customer, and they often apply to the priciest plan options.

Select retailers with trade-in programs could offer you gift cards toward future purchases instead, so you don’t have to be locked into a contract to take advantage of the savings from parting with your old device. However, those offers may not provide as much of a deal as traditional trade-in offers. We’ve got specifics on how much you can expect to receive for trading in your phone at select retailers and carriers below.
