It is believed that Lord Krishna advised Draupadi to observe the Karwa Chauth vrat for the safety and well-being of Arjuna when he set out for battle. Karwa Chauth 2026: Vrat Rituals And Traditions

1. On the auspicious day of the vrat, wake up before sunrise and have your meal and water.
2. Around 4:00 p.m., choose a small square area near a wall, make a swastika mark with haldi, and place the Karwa Chauth calendar against it. The calendar should depict Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesh, and Lord Kartikeya.
3. In front of the calendar, place a bowl filled with raw rice. Also keep roli, sacred thread, hald, a glass of water, betel leaf, mango leaves, and a betel nut on a plate.
4. Now, place the karwa at the centre of the swastika mark and fill it with water. Cover the karwa and over it, sprinkle wheat grains and sugar. Then, apply roli and tie the sacred thread.
5. If you are doing the puja alone, prepare another Karwa with the same set of rituals and place it next to the picture of Karwa Chauth. This Karwa belongs to the goddess Parvati.
6. Now, dip the mango leaves into the glass of water and sprinkle some water on the image of the Karwa Chauth. Apply roli to the image of deities, mix turmeric and rice grains and sprinkle it on the Karwa Chauth.
7. Now, you need to exchange your Karwa with the Karwa of Goddess Parvati, and this process has to be done 7 times.
8. Pray sincerely and seek forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes made while performing the rituals.
9. Now, recite the Karwa Chauth Katha, and after it, place the karwas in a nearby temple.
10. After the puja, once the moon appears, light the diya on the thali with your husband standing in front of you. Offer prayers to the moon and perform the aarti facing it. Sprinkle rice and haldi in the direction of the moon, and offer the kalash of water to the moon. Pour a little water on the ground in front of you and keep some aside to break your fast.
11. Then, look at the moon through the sieve and afterwards at your husband. Your husband will then help you break your fast by offering you water and sweets.

Ved Sharma was married to Leelavati, and the couple had three children, two sons and a daughter named Veerawati. After Veerawati got married to a Brahmin, she observed her first Karwa Chauth fast along with her sisters-in-law.

Veerawati grew extremely weak due to hunger and thirst and eventually collapsed. Unable to bear their sister’s suffering, her brothers decided to help her. They created an illusion in the sky, making it appear as though the moon had risen, and convinced Veerawati to break her fast.

As she began eating, Veerawati sensed something was wrong. She found a strand of hair in her first bite, sneezed while taking the second, and soon received a message from her in-laws calling her back to her marital home. When she arrived, she was devastated to discover that her husband had passed away.

Overcome with grief, Veerawati wept bitterly. At that moment, Goddess Indrani appeared to console her and revealed the reason behind the tragedy. She explained that Veerawati had broken her fast without offering argya to the moon, which led to her husband’s untimely death.

To atone for her mistake, Goddess Indrani instructed Veerawati to observe a fast on the fourth day of every month with complete devotion. Veerawati followed the goddess’s instructions with faith and sincerity, and as a result, her husband was restored to life.
