On this auspicious occasion, people buy gold, silver, utensils, or even new gadgets—symbols of abundance meant to invite Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, into their homes. It is believed that such purchases on this day bring good fortune and prosperity throughout the year.

Who Is God Dhanvantari?

In Hindu mythology, Lord Dhanvantari is regarded as the physician of the gods (Devas) and an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He is often depicted emerging from the churning of the cosmic Ocean of Milk (Samudra Manthan), holding a pot of Amrit (nectar of immortality) in one hand, a herb or leech in another, symbolising his connection with healing and Ayurveda.

According to the Bhagavata Purana, during the great churning of the ocean by gods and demons to obtain Amrit, Dhanvantari appeared carrying the divine nectar.

The demons initially snatched it away, but Lord Vishnu, assuming the enchanting form of Mohini, cleverly distributed the nectar only among the gods.

Another version says that Lord Indra later sent Dhanvantari to Earth to share his wisdom with humankind. His teachings laid the foundation of Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine that emphasises balance between mind, body, and spirit.

Both the Vedas and Puranas describe Dhanvantari as a master of surgery and medicine. His wisdom continues to shape holistic health practices in India to this day. He is revered as the “Father of Ayurveda” for introducing the science of life and longevity to humankind.

Why Is God Dhanvantari Worshipped On Dhanteras?

While Dhanteras is popularly associated with wealth and shopping, its spiritual essence goes deeper. It is the day when Lord Dhanvantari is believed to have emerged from the ocean, marking it as an auspicious occasion for invoking good health.

According to the Charaka Samhita, the knowledge of Ayurveda is eternal—revealed anew in every cosmic cycle whenever humanity needs healing. Lord Vishnu, in the form of Dhanvantari, descends to Earth to reintroduce this sacred science and relieve human suffering.

Dhanvantari is said to have taught Ayurveda to sages like Susruta, Pauskalavata, and Aurabha, whose texts form the foundation of classical Indian medicine. His teachings are recorded in scriptures like the Agni Purana and the Susruta Samhita, which describe detailed methods of surgery, herbal treatments, and preventive health practices.

Thus, Dhanteras is not only about invoking material prosperity but also about celebrating spiritual and physical well-being. Devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi for wealth, Lord Kubera for abundance, and Lord Dhanvantari for good health—acknowledging that prosperity is incomplete without wellness.

On this day, homes are cleaned, decorated, and illuminated with diyas (lamps) to welcome positive energy. Many also perform Dhanvantari Puja, offering basil leaves, fruits, and clarified butter while reciting the Dhanvantari mantra to seek protection from illness and disease.

God Dhanvantari represents the belief that prevention, balance, and harmony are the keys to a fulfilling life.

Dhanteras 2025 Puja Muhurat

For those planning to perform the rituals on Dhanteras, the shubh (auspicious) Lakshmi Puja Muhurat in 2025 is expected to fall between 7:17 PM and 8:20 PM, according to Drik Panchang. However, timings may vary by region, so devotees are advised to consult their local panchang or seek guidance from a learned pandit.
