Small business credit card perks

Discounts and statement credits

Some business credit cards offer cardholders instant access to discounts on software that may be useful to their business. Other than discounts, some cards may offer limited-time offers like exclusive free trials or free credits to try out a business-related service.

For instance, the Business Platinum Card® from American Express lets you earn up to $150 in statement credits on Dell Technologies purchases made on the card (enrollment required). You can also get a $250 statement credit for spending at least $600 on Adobe purchases per calendar year for your business. (enrollment required)

The point is, if you need to sign up for these services for your business anyway, you might as well use the card to receive a statement credit (or other discounted offer), so you can save some money on your bill. Think about some of the services, brands and retailers you use for your business and see if credit card issuers offer a discount if you pay using their card.

Targeted rewards categories

Another contender, the American Express® Business Gold Card offers rotational rewards categories. You can earn 4X points on the two categories where your business spends the most each month. You have six categories to choose from and these categories can change but the 4X points can be earned up to the first $150,000 spent across those two categories (after, 1X points). This way, you don’t have to pigeon-hole yourself into rewards for spending categories pre-set by the issuer.

The six categories are: U.S. media providers for advertising, software and electronic goods, restaurants, gas stations, transit purchases and wireless phone services.
