Speaking to Moneycontrol, Dr Deepali Lodha, a gynaecologist at AIMS Hospital, Dombivli (Mumbai), shares 10 important principles that can help women make informed decisions about vaginal care and long-term reproductive health.

The Body Has Its Own Natural Cleaning System

Many women use soaps and liquid washes to clean the vagina, but these are unnecessary. The vagina is a self-cleaning organ and does not require any internal cleansing products. Cleaning the outer area, known as the vulva, with lukewarm water is sufficient. Using chemical-based products can disturb the natural pH balance of the vagina, increasing the risk of infections.

Choose Cotton Underwear

Synthetic fabrics like nylon do not allow proper air circulation. This traps moisture and heat, creating an ideal environment for bacteria and yeast to grow. Wearing cotton underwear allows better airflow, keeps the area dry, and significantly reduces the risk of infections. For everyday use, cotton underwear is always the healthier choice.

Don’t Panic About Vaginal Discharge

However, if the discharge turns yellow or green, has a foul smell, or is accompanied by itching or pain, it is important to consult a doctor immediately. These could be signs of an infection that needs medical attention.

Always Clean From Front to Back

After using the toilet, it is very important to clean from front (vagina) to back (towards the anus). Cleaning in the opposite direction can transfer bacteria from the anal area to the vagina, significantly increasing the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). This may seem like a small habit, but it plays a major role in preventing infections.

Annual Gynaecological Check-Ups Are a Must

Just like regular health check-ups, an annual gynaecological examination is essential. Tests such as pelvic exams and Pap smears help detect cervical cancer, infections, or other health issues at an early stage. Identifying problems early is always better than dealing with complications later.

Avoid Scented Products

Scented pads, sprays, and perfumed vaginal washes available in the market should be avoided. The chemicals used in these products can irritate sensitive skin and disrupt the natural pH balance. This can lead to unnecessary infections and discomfort. Unscented, simple hygiene products are always safer and healthier.

Track Your Menstrual Cycle

Keeping track of your menstrual cycle—when it starts, how long it lasts, and how heavy the flow is—is extremely important. This helps you quickly notice missed periods, excessive bleeding, or unexpected spotting. Such information is also very useful for doctors when assessing your overall reproductive health.

Never Ignore Discomfort

Persistent itching, burning sensations, or pain during sex or urination should never be ignored. These symptoms are not normal and should not be treated with home remedies or ignored in the hope that they will go away on their own. They may indicate conditions such as yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis and require prompt medical treatment.

Food and Water Are Powerful Medicine

What you eat directly affects your vaginal health. Doctors recommend drinking at least 12–15 glasses of water daily to keep the body hydrated. Including leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, and probiotic-rich foods like curd in your diet helps maintain a healthy balance of natural bacteria in the body.

Practice Safe Sex

Condoms are not just for preventing pregnancy; they also play a crucial role in protecting against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These infections can seriously harm reproductive health if left untreated. Practising safe sex is essential for long-term vaginal and overall health.

Good vaginal health depends on awareness, simple habits, and timely medical care. Understanding your body, avoiding harmful products, and seeking expert advice when needed can go a long way in protecting both physical comfort and reproductive well-being.
